I'm Thankful for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is not my favorite holiday and I do not keep quiet about it. Yet, I'm going to spare you, dear readers, my laundry list of complaints and tell you instead that I was thankful for today.

I spent all day with these goofs:

I didn't have to cook, do dishes, travel, or make my kids behave in someone else's home.

Cracker Barrel for the win!

Brian was able to eat the traditional turkey meal with sweet potato casserole and pumpkin pie. My mom got chicken n' dumplings (an old favorite of hers). My son picked homemade macaroni and cheese. The girls were able to get their standard chicken and fries so they were happy. And me? Mouthwatering beef pot roast. Something I never make (my family doesn't eat beef) and hardly ever get to eat. It was heaven.

The kids got to pick a prize from the old country store, too. Jaina got a Yankee Candle de-odorizer. Jayce got wind-up chattering teeth (no, I'm not kidding), and Jocelyn found a Ty Beanie Ballz that was designed after Muno, a character from Yo Gabba Gabba. Can we say Best Thanksgiving Ever?

I even got to sneak in a picture! Go Grandma and her mastering of back button focus!!!

Yes, I admittedly did miss my Tucker, GA and my Southern Florida family very much. But since it just wasn't possible to travel this year due to our schedule (and Brian's crazy work project), coupled with the fact that my stepmom wasn't cooking on actual Thanksgiving, it was just easier to do our own thing this year.

The rest of the day was spent watching movies and lounging around and playing with neighbors. Jocelyn even played outside a bit.

Oh, and Jayce played Minecraft and Brian drank eggnog, took a nap, and then played darts with our neighbor. Seriously, it was a great day.

I hope your Thanksgiving was filled with family, love, blessings, and thankfulness!

And There Was One Time That She Was A Pig

I went to a local children's consignment sale back in September hoping to score some Fall/Winter Minnie Mouse themed clothes in case my opinionated two-year old was still boycotting anything that didn't come from Disney.

Although I *did* find a few cute things with mouse ears, I also bought an adorable red long sleeved shirt with a cute pink pig on it. I recognized the character as Olivia, the pig from the hit TV show from Nick Jr based on the popular children's books. Since we have some of the books, it was my hope that I could one day convince Jocelyn to wear said shirt.

Through the months of September, October, and most of November, that would be a big, fat NOPE.

"I DON'T WANT TO WEAR OLIVIA! I JUST WANT TO BE SNOOPY!"

You get the picture.

But one morning, she woke up and said, "I want to be a pig! I want a pig shirt!"

And I had just the shirt!

She grabbed her stuffed animal pig, named Babycakes, sat down to eat her bacon, and happily put her Olivia shirt on.

Yes, the big kids did tell Jocelyn that she was, in fact, eating pig. She had no moral issue with this. She likes bacon. It tastes good. No problems.

Then she had to go get her Olivia book and read it on the floor. Keep in mind that this all took place before 7:00 AM on a week day.

Jocelyn was a pig most of the morning. Then she was Snoopy. Then she was Mickey. Then she was Minnie.

Now she has a Yo Gabba Gabba Gabba shirt that I have not been able to remove from her body since Monday afternoon. I'm sure that's a blog post in and of itself.

I love toddler fashion :)

Leaves

Autumn in South Carolina is a tricky thing.

We have a bit of trouble with consistent temperatures here. We'll have a week of normal (lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's), and then a week of cold front (lows in the teens and highs in the 30's), followed by a heat wave (lows in the 50's and highs close to 80). Basically, you have to be prepared for a 30 degree temperature change throughout the day no matter which weather pattern we are in.

This makes finding the peak time for Fall foliage difficult. You never know when the leaves are going to change from green to orange. Or, how long it will stay. It just takes one wind and rain storm to blow everything away.

There is a grove of trees over by my husband's work that turns into beautiful picture of bright yellow in late November. You have to be fast... they turn last and they don't last long. I happened to be over there on Friday when I had lunch with Brian and saw that a few of the trees had turned. Miraculously, Jocelyn wasn't wearing her Snoopy shirt that day.

Although the lighting was quite different from the year I took Jaina and Jayce's pictures there, I am still glad I took Jocelyn for an impromtu shoot.

I happened to drive over that way today on the way home from the library and saw that the rain last night has already taken every single golden leaf off the trees.

That was fast.

Glad I was faster :)

Bribes

So, Jocelyn is going through a Snoopy Phase right now. That is, when she's not wearing Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, or Finn the Human stuff.

And since we only own ONE Snoopy shirt in our house (well, technically there are three but only one fits Jocelyn!), she wears it a lot.

For the most part, I don't care. There are only a few reasons why the Snoopy Shirt must come off.

1. The last three nights' dinner is on there
2. Its freezing outside and she refuses to wear a long sleeve shirt underneath
3. We are going somewhere that requires nice clothes, like a nice restaurant or a piano recital.
4. I don't feel like taking her picture, yet again, in a Snoopy shirt with ears.

It was the fourth reason that made me resort to bribery the other day. I have a picture of Jayce age 3 on my bookshelf and would like one of Jocelyn for the other frame.

This is how my request was processed.

"Jocelyn, can we go outside and take a picture?"
"No. I go outside and color chalk! I don't want a picture."
"Please? Mommy will color anything you want on the driveway after you let me take a picture."
"NO! I don't wanna take a picture. You color my friends, Mommy?"

(and by "friends", she means the annoying Yo Gabba Gabba characters that I've discovered I am NOT good at drawing with chalk or any other medium.)

"Sure, if you let me take your picture outside, I will color all of your friends."
"Toodee??? And Brobee? and Foofa? and Plex? and Muno!!!"
"Yes, Jocelyn, but we have to take your picture first."
Sigh followed by, "O-k-a-y...."

"Here, can you wear this sweater?"
"No, I wear my snoopy shirt."
"But mommy wants you to wear a sweater because its cold outside. You can take it off after the picture."
"O-k-a-y...."

"Can I see your snoopy ears? Let's wear a hairbow for just a minute to keep your hair out of your eyes!"
"But I want my snoopy ears!!!"
"You can have them back in just a minute! Just one pretty picture for me, please??"
"And then I can have my snoopy ears?"
"YES!"

She sat down for about 5 seconds before getting up with the intention of taking her sweater off. I think she was going to hold me to that "one picture" thing pretty literally. Thank goodness for a fast DSLR!

The entire torture took about 2 minutes from start to finish. Negotiations took way longer.

I was a good mommy and kept my bargain. I drew 5 horribly ugly chalk characters on our driveway. Jocelyn is quite the art critic. "No, Toodee's ears don't look like that!"

Then Jayce came outside to see what we were doing. And to ask for a peanut butter sandwich.

Inspiration struck....

"Oh, sure... I'll make you one! But first, let me take your picture in your new glasses!"

Why, oh why, did I not request glare free glasses for him???

Jayce, who hates getting his picture taken, said it was totally worth it.

As you see, there are no pictures of Jaina. Non-monetary bribes don't work so well for her. She's too smart for that!

Halloween Happened

No time to write or caption or explain. Halloween happened a week ago and I'll be mad at myself in years to come if I forget to document our night here.

Things to know about Halloween 2014:

-The kids dressed up as Adventure time characters
-Mommy and Daddy did, too.
-Jaina trick-or-treated with friends, not with Brian.
-Jocelyn and Jayce only made it to the houses on our street
-Our pumpkins rotted the next day, despite the cold temps.
-Monica still gives out full size candy bars.
-Her house is our favorite
-Jocelyn's favorite candy is Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.
-(That's my girl!)
