A brief taste of Spring

Let me preface this post by stating the following:

I am, in no way, shape, or form, comparing the cold snap our Southern weather has been experiencing to the standard Winter weather that my Northern blogging friends are submitted to for a good 8 months out of the year.

According to Southern standards, it has been just plain ridiculously cold here. As my Stepmom would say, "Its colder than a witch's titty in a brass bra!" Isn't that nice imagery?

I don't do cold. I was born and raised in Southern Florida, thank you very much. And tropical temperatures are what my body needs to be happy.

I love hot. I love the sun. I love humidity. I love the intense searing heat that blasts you as soon as you open your car door from leaving it in the parking lot in the middle of summer. I even worked at a greenhouse one summer and barely broke a sweat the entire time.

So why the heck do I live in South Carolina instead of Florida? Well, that's another story for another post.

I've lived here since the Fall of 1997 and I'm still not used to the Winters here. 40 degrees as the high? No thank you! 28 for the low?? I'm not okay with that.

I don't want to have to wear gloves to steer my car, or even have to warm it up in the first place. I don't like heavy coats that you have to lug around everywhere. I really dislike the drying cracking peeling skin that accompanies the cold months here.

If I had my way, it would be 80 degrees year round here. I'd wear tank tops on Christmas and wear the soles down on my favorite pair of Birkenstocks. My hair would perpetually be in a ponytail and I would take my kids to the park every single day.

But, instead, I've been subjected to temperatures below freezing for what seems like weeks now. Teens. Temperatures in the teens if you can believe it. I can barely.

Just when I thought I couldn't take it anymore, the crazy cold stopped. And the beautiful South Carolina state was bathed in warmth to the tune of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Now you're talking. Get this... it even got up to 60 degrees today!!!

We totally took advantage of the warmer temps and played outside all afternoon yesterday.

Of course I had to be a mean mommy and insist that homework was done first.

Now that I've had my little taste of Spring, I'm ready for the real thing!

  1. How fun! I love that you got a little of the sunshine you crave so much. Winter can be hard due to being cooped up to escape the cold for so long. I hope you get many more tastes of spring before the real thing sets in.

  3. A fellow South Carolinian. Wasn't yesterday just beautiful?? I have spring fever BAD. Nothing makes me happier than hearing my children play in the street.

  5. I ran in 48 degree weather with high winds last Sunday, I was numb, but I did it. That's a big feat for me. I don't mind 40's or even high 30's, it's just a big deal for the kids on school mornings.

I am a sun sign, Leo, so it has to be sunny and some what warm. The problem down here in FL is the cold rain or sleet we get with the cold weather. It makes it impossible for us to go out in.

I am sure if we lived in a colder climate for a while, we would acclimate to the colder temperatures, like I did when I lived in VA for 2 years.

Jeremy on the other hand would never move from here, never.

  6. Beautiful! I would give a lot for a taste of spring right now, but we are definitely still a few months out from any signs here!
